Macy Mitchell
To the highly regarded Republic Area Retired School Personnel Association:
First of all, I want to sincerely apologize for not promptly filling out the survey sent to me. I truly understand this is incredibly important to you and the future of our current educators, students, and beyond. I highly regard your profession, as my mother is a former educator herself. I have loyalty to you all, our area’s public education system, and its educators.
When the survey was initially sent out, COVID-19 had hit. Good ole’ 2020. Many of you know that I have two businesses, one of which had to be shut down for 2 months and furlough 30 staff. My other family business was allowed to remain open, and we made the decision to keep all employees full time as long as possible, even though our daily hours were shortened. Unfortunately, I had to take a step away from the campaign for over two months as my workload instantly tripled creating the right CDC protocols and handling the Payment Protection Program with the government. You all were on my mind, so I contacted Becky (who I met at her house this week), and let her know I wasn’t sure when I was going to be able to complete the survey, or if at all.
Immediately into this crisis, I saw a huge need in the community. So instead of tackling my campaign, I decided to spend my time creating the Community Crisis Outreach Program where I facilitated over 40 partnerships and resources for our local community and throughout 417 for those in need (food, diapers, delivery services to our seniors, masks, isolation counseling, etc.). This proved to be a huge undertaking, as I didn’t just work with our areas’ superintendents, churches, and community leaders, but also with Greene County Health Department, the United Way, and the Springfield Mayor to expand my outreach’s ability to help those in need. I even had a website created at 417outreach.com, where you can find all these resources, as well as a Facebook page called "Community Crisis Outreach," which is a hub for all information. We currently have over 700 people following that page.
During this time I turned down several interviews and surveys because of the community’s needs of which I needed to attend. I will admit, though, that out of all the surveys, I had yours on my mind. As I began to dig out time to fill out the survey, I had gotten calls or had conversations with our local superintendents and current educators letting me know that I was "their guy," and they had my support. After these talks, I was under the impression that this had been communicated to you, and I may, in turn, not need to fill out the survey after all. I unfortunately assumed that their support meant that we could move forward. It was not a lack of transparency on my end, but rather I felt the support was already there. Please accept my apology for not contacting you all and talking further.
With the little time left in the campaign for the primary election, every extra minute I have now is voter contact, and of course that includes you, who I respect greatly. Let me say this, as the superintendents and educators throughout the district have seen my heart over the last few years and talked directly to me, I will fight to protect our schools here. We have an incredibly strong performing district and outstanding educators with amazing hearts (many are dear friends), and you all have my full support. I WILL NOT TOUCH YOUR RETIREMENT and will fight and oppose it if ever suggested.
I am on the Care to Learn Board with school board members and influencers, such as Tammy Messier, Dr. Chance, Natalie Botkin, Josie McPhail, and other educators in the area, working together for the needs of Health, Hunger, and Hygiene of our students throughout our system. I feel this group can vouch for my loyalty and convictions for our education system. I run a weekly Special Olympic program out of my local business as a training and mentorship program, aiming to fulfill a niche in the Republic community that may not be met with our youth. I support our PTO President as she is a dear friend of mine. I have helped raise money at local events put on through the last few years partnering with our school system. Lastly, I have been involved for the last decade in our local schools speaking, reading books, participating in the Watch Dog program, and filling backpacks with goodies, long before political ambition. I have pictures, posts, and references to show my dedication to you all and our education system. I am far more involved with our school system than any other candidate on either side of the aisle and have a proven record of it. My mantra is “action over words” for my campaign and for my life. As you “hire” your next State Representative, my long history of action is much stronger than any words on a page, and I hope that brings instant trust.
Please know that I stood up for this political position to protect what we have, to be a watch dog for bad legislation, and to further make our district and then state a better place to live. It’s my job to go to bat for what your needs are. As your representative, I do not bring my agenda to the table, but YOURS. The definition of “representative” is to truly represent the needs and concerns of my district, and that I can assure you I will do. As a local business owner, that’s what I would want! I’m tired of politicians bringing their agenda to Jeff City or to Washington, DC, because that’s not what’s supposed to happen. As a business owner, community leader, and family man, I am someone who will speak for all of us, not just for myself. I am someone who has been in the trenches of the community and with our students. Please consider my resume and let that evidence give you confidence that I will represent our area as it should be represented.
I hope you all have a blessed week.
Respectfully,
Macy Mitchell
